Two cats play in the corner, paws raised at nothing, innocent as moonlight. Above them their shadows have woken: slit-eyed, fang-bright, grinning wide, a ball of yarn burning like a captured sun. Cats came to guard the grain and decided to stay on their own terms. In the farmhouse and the ancient granary alike, they let us believe we’d tamed them. Their names were Aster and Tui.
