A white horse rears in the shadows, mane flung back like a cry it can’t quite make. Above it rages the horse before the bridle, all spine and hoof and thunder, straining at every seam. Horses carried empires on their backs. They carried a boy across farm paddocks too. You can break a horse. You can never quite break the storm it was made from. His name was Digger.
